This should help to improve your performance on an exam.

There are 3 assignments due Friday:
1- Letter to Parents
2- Completed Planning Resources
3- Cornell Notes

Please note the new grading weights.
Test 40%
Quizzes 15%

First week of Q3  (T, Jan 16- F, Jan 19)

We are thankful for and give honor to the great leaders represented for Black History Month-

Lesson Essential Questions (EQ) and Learning Objectives (LO):
EQ:
1- Arguable questions that must be supported with “proof” & evidence: Do people have a moral responsibility to peacefully “break” laws that are unjust? What could be the consequences of failing to act? Who decides what is just or unjust? How do you “know” that you are right? What evidence do you have to support your position?

2- Arguable questions that get you to view a different perspective: In his letter from Birmingham Jail, Dr./ Reverend King states: "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere" -so, what things do you see in the world that you feel need to be challenged? Why? How do you know you are right? What if others have a different perspective?

LO:
By the end of this module/series of lessons, students will be able to:
1- Identify the main idea and supporting points;
2-cite passages as “proof”/evidence/support;
3- form some personal reactions to discern how this text is still relevant in our contemporary context; and,
4- argue/defend a position.

Wednesday, Jan. 17th, 2018

First- Students will engage in Discussion/Discourse.
Consider the question below &  use the template to answer the questions.

What are some laws in today’s society that you consider unjust? What makes that law unjust, and what do you believe should be done to address that injustice?

Discussion Handout:

Second- Students will read the letter and answer the reading comprehension questions from the handout.

Reading Comprehension Handout
Context: "In 1963, numerous civil rights activists, including Martin Luther King, Jr., gathered in Birmingham, Alabama, to protest the racist treatment of African Americans in the South. In response, the city of Birmingham declared that any protests or demonstrations were illegal. King and many other activists continued to protest and were arrested. A group of white religious leaders wrote a letter admonishing King for causing unrest in the city, and their letter was published in the local newspaper. While in jail, King responded in a letter written on the margins of a newspaper, because it was the only paper available. King gave the letter to his lawyers, who published what is now known as the famous “Letter from Birmingham Jail.”  As you read, identify how King responds to the clergymen and how he challenges their arguments" (Common Lit, 2018).
